When Should You Replace A Tyre?
Low tread depth
The UK legal minimum for cars is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the whole tyre. Grip in the wet drops well before that, so many drivers replace tyres earlier.
Visible damage
Cuts, bulges, cracks or exposed cords mean the tyre should be replaced. Damage to the sidewall can't be repaired.
Uneven wear
Wear on one edge of the tyre can point to alignment or pressure issues. Replacing the tyre is only part of the fix, so it's worth having alignment checked too.
Unrepairable puncture
If a puncture is in the wrong place or too large to repair safely, a replacement is needed. See puncture repair.
How To Find Your Tyre Size
Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall of the tyre. For example, on a tyre marked 205/55 R16 91V:
- 205 is the tyre width in millimetres
- 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width
- R16 means a radial tyre for a 16 inch rim
- 91V is the load index and speed rating
